Pinion published an online survey in September 2018, to gather feedback with the aim to see what people would want in a new Atom watch.

The survey ran for three weeks, and gathered 252 responses, which are shown below.

Pinion then used the outcome of this as a starting point for the specification and outline design of the new watch.

Q1

The original Atom was sized at 41mm in diameter. What size would you prefer a new watch to be?

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • < 38mm
  • 39-40mm
  • 41mm
  • 42mm
  • 43mm +
  • Any
  • Other

Comment: 39-40 was the most popular size. The new Atom has been designed to 39mm case diameter.

Q2

The original Atom was matt / blasted finish. What finish would you prefer a new watch to be?

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Matt / Blasted
  • Brushed
  • Polished
  • I don't mind

Comment: Brushed was the most popular finish, followed by matt / blasted. We decided to retain the blasted finish as it most suits the design of the watch.

Q3

Would you prefer a Black / DLC watch or the original steel finishing?

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Steel finishing
  • Black DLC coated
  • I don't mind

Comment: Steel finishing is clear winner here, which will be retained for the Atom 39.

Q4

We’d always make a new watch with a black dial, but if we were to produce a secondary dial option, which colour would you prefer?

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Blue
  • Green
  • Brown
  • Maroon
  • Grey / Anthracite
  • White / Cream
  • Silver
  • Other

Comment: White / cream was the most popular, followed by blue. We wanted a strong contrast between two models so opted for the white, but wouldn’t rule out producing a blue Atom in the future.

Q5

Would you prefer a date display or not

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Yes - Date
  • No date
  • I don't mind

Comment: It makes sense to provide a date display to the Atom 39.

Q6

What position of date display do you prefer?

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • At 3:00
  • Angled at 4:30
  • At 6:00
  • I don't mind

Comment: This is one question that often divides opinion. 6:00pm date display being the most popular, closely followed by 3:00. Given a 6:00 would be more difficult and costly to produce for this model, we’ve gone with a 3H date for the Atom 39.

Q7

What shape of date display do you prefer?

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Rectangle
  • Circular
  • I don't mind

Comment: We’ve made all of our date windows rectangular as we feel it provides the most clarity, the same will apply for the Atom 39.

Q8

What’s your prefered movement? A Miyota 9015 as the original Atom or a Swiss ETA? ( Please bear in mind ETA would increase the price of the watch ).

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Japanese Miyota 9015
  • Swiss ETA 2824-2
  • I don't mind

Comment: Despite the success of the first Atom watch, an option for a Swiss movement is very popular. The Atom 39 will therefore by powered by the ETA.

Q9

From the existing watches, do you prefer the look of the original Atom V1 or the Atom ND ( No date )

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Atom (v1)
  • Atom ND

Comment: The use of numerals for all hours was the most popular comment we received. The Atom 39 will follow the original design closer than the limited run ND.

Q10

Do you own any of these other British brands? (Check all that apply)

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Bremont
  • Christopher Ward
  • Farer
  • Fears
  • Garrick
  • Marloe
  • Schofield
  • Vertex
  • Other

Comment: Other notable British brands mentioned were: Smiths, Precista, Harold Pinchbeck

Q11

Do you already own a Pinion watch?

( Responses show % and are rounded to nearest percentage)

  • Yes
  • No
