Limited production of 50 |  42mm  |  Handwound Swiss movement

Sometimes, with all the complications, elaborate designs and ways to display time, it is refreshing to see a watch that brings everything back to the essence of it all.

That watch is the Pure. Available in a limited edition of just 50 examples in marine grade bronze the Pure is water resistant to 100 metres and is powered by a Swiss made handwound movement.

The multi-level dial is a study in black radiance, with differing finishes to provide subtle visual contrasts. The applied bespoke indexes take their influence from 19th century letterforms and are individually milled, polished, then filled with our own SuperLuminova mix that provides a classic look, but with excellent visual clarity.

The crown, featuring Pinion’s signature gearwheel icon is a fitting embellishment to the wonderful movement within; a decorated handwound Unitas 6498.

Originally developed as a pocket watch calibre in the 1950s this dependable, robust Swiss movement provides accurate timekeeping and a power reserve of 45 hours. The requirement to wind the timepiece on a regular basis will allow the owner to form a connection with the watch and to discover the delight of the slower tick-tick sound that you only really get with handwound movements such as the 6498.

With full assembly of the watch undertaken in England, as a finishing touch the Pure will be presented in a handcrafted solid wooden box finished in a beautiful high gloss piano black with polished chrome-plated hardware and soft blue inner lining.

With purity of purpose on the dial, and behind it, Pure draws inspiration from professional instruments of the past and reinvents it for the wrist now.

Deconstructing the dial

Central to the Axis Pure is the dial, which core to our creative principles, has been designed to be simple and highly legible. However behind this simplicity is a complex set of parts, materials and engineering techniques that we have employed to create a miniature work of art.

The dial was designed with multiple levels. The base level, which is made of brass, is coated in galvanic black. Cut into the dial is the circular recess at 6H that is designed for the Unitas 6498 sub-second hand, this recess is then coloured, polished and finished with engine turning before the seconds are overprinted in black. Finally the white lines are printed onto the black base, forming the backdrop for the applied indexes to sit on.

The numerals and batons are the next level. For this, we’ve adapted a geometric sans-serif typeface that takes design influence from engraving letterforms of the late 19th century. Each index is individually milled and polished; prior to being filled with our own bespoke Luminova mix, which emulates old radium paint, used on vintage instruments. The polished edges of the indexes are designed to catch the light and will compliment our diamond cut hands that have the same finishing effect.

The inner raised circular level of the dial will (via the central cannon pinion) hold the hour and minute hands and is finished in satin black like the lower level but to provide an incredibly subtle contrast we designed it to be finely brushed. Seen at different angles, the finish of the inner level will provide contrast giving the dial depth. Finally overprinted in sharp white will be the Pinion lettering, our trademark gear wheel and triangular indexes that align with the white lines on the base.

The dial reflects the essence of our creative code, which values clarity over complexity and meticulous attention to detail which is made with to micro-millimetre precision.
